ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIAS:

Online encyclopedias can provide wonderful background information for your topic, making your book and articles more successful.  This would be true even if you are researching local, Central Oregon, work, school or community issues.   Let’s say you are researching  transportation options for Bend.  Some background information on transportation planning in general might be very useful, and our online Encyclopedia of Urban America: The Cities and Suburbs would provide that for you.  On the other hand, let’s say you want to try and solve a problem at work having to do with communication.  The section on “communication” in the Gale Encyclopedia of Management might be just what you need.

USE JOURNAL ARTICLE  DATABASES FOR ARTICLES:

Journal article databases let you search on your topic to locate academic, scholarly articles.  The library purchases these databases for you to search–this is different from searching on Google or other “free web” search engines!

TO SEARCH A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE/JOURNAL ARTICLE DATABASE:

Journal Article Database Search Hints

  • start with keyword searching when available

  • use ” ” for phrases
    example: “parks and recreat*”

  • use * to locate endings to words (truncation).
    example: communit*

  • use boolean commands
    example: recycl* AND communit*

    example: (art* OR music*) AND communit*

  • searches can be specific

  • full text articles may be e-mailed, downloaded or printed from the screen.

  • other articles  may be ordered via inter-library loan.

Why not just use Google to find your information? BECAUSE the library search tools we offer get you to the information you need fast and effectively.  Library search tools such as  library catalogs, databases and online encyclopedias give you FREE, FAST and FACTUAL information so that you can complete your writing research assignments!
